Had a garden Room 20mtr square laid and they did it in total start to finish in 3 hours! I was amazed at the time - I did 5m2 myself and took probably 8 hours and I had to use a self leveller. Floor is great and perfectly level. They are very professional and probably used to dealing with larger areas with the the pump they used but so pleased with result. The price was competitive but the results were worth it.

Sand Screed London & Cement Screed London
When Should It Be Used?

worker with machine is doing screeding London

Cement and sand screed can be used in London jobs that require suspended or in-situ concrete floors, or as a topping to light aggregate screeds, and can even be utilised in a floating construction over insulation to give acoustic or thermal properties. When using cement and sand screed in our London projects we eliminate potential problems that can arise  when using screed on site,  problems which can sometimes damage the integrity of the installation and its suitability for purpose or longevity.

Without exception, with all our screeding work in London, we work closely with each of our customers and architects, guaranteeing that the right materials are laid in the right areas. Trusting us with all your screeding work in London is a great way to get great results.

Check our Screeding Installation Process

When laying sand and cement screed in London projects, when the work is done by hand it can be less time efficient than flowable screed systems  that are available.

Concrete screed dry naturally and subject to environmental conditions on site once it is completely installed. It also can be opened to foot and light vehicular traffic after four days and full site traffic after seven days. Most screeding contractors in London arrive on site hours in advance, allowing them to set up pump and check floor measurements to ensure the amount of screed ordered is sufficient.

When working from a level datum point for a concrete screed in London, such as the base of the stairs or a doorway, a number of tripod levelling gauges are placed around the floor at various points. As experienced screeders in London will know, with the help of a laser adjusted to a consistent depth, the finished screed surface is level throughout when done through this process.

Screeding in London starts once the mixer truck arrives, which is when the screeding contractors pour the pumped until the surface level reaches the marker tripods, which are subsequently removed. This kind of screeding in most London jobs takes less than an hour, including laying an entire ground floor in an average new home

Screeding contractors in London always  make sure the screed is smooth and level and without air bubbles, and the freshly applied floor screed is then manually agitated by someone wading through using a ‘dappling bar’.

For experienced screeding companies in London, getting the  screed right is not  a difficult process,  but for less knowledgeable screeding contractors it can be easy to get wrong. . For all your concrete screed needs in London, give us a call and we’ll work with you to get things right.

Why Use a Sand Screed, Cement Screed and Concrete Screed in London?

new cement screed London made during house extension

For many or our screeding projects in London, the floor screed is made by screeding contractors from a combination of sharp sand, cement and water. This is also known as a sand and cement screed. Though sand and concrete screed in London can be a more expensive floor solution, the quality of product compensates for the cost.

As one of the screeding companies in London that uses only high quality materials, we know that the results ensure GM floor screeds deliver a professional, uniform, top quality sand and cement screed with an outstanding finish. When it comes to laying tiles, laminated or vinyl flooring, screeding contractors in London know that it is necessary to use a screed if the structural floor is not level.

When it comes to concrete screed in London buildings, the main reason for using one part cement to three to five parts sharp sand, is to give a smooth and level floor on which to lay your chosen floor finish. One of the advantages of this screeding in many London premises is that the thickness of the floor screed allows it to take up normal variations in flatness and levelness of the base on which it is laid.

Most screeding companies in London know that the most common types of flooring laid over levelling screeds include carpet and carpet tiles, linoleum, laminate and vinyl flooring and tiles, wooden blocks, and ceramic tiles. When we use a concrete screed in our London work, these levelling screeds are not there to act as a wearing surface, hence they need to be covered with a chosen floor finish.

In terms of what is preferred, a floor screed in London properties is chosen for those laying underfloor heating, where the best practice recommends that the best way to avoid movement problems arising, floor screed in London should should not cover an area of more than 40m² or a distance in any one direction longer than 8m.

When you need information about concrete screed, sand screed, and other screeding work in London, we are one of the concrete screeding companies who you can rely on.

How to Prepare a Floor for Screeding?
Helpful Tips about Concrete Floor Screeding London

When preparing for screeding work in London, the elements that determine the installation project, include the size of the site, as well as the screed needed. The time it takes to finish curing is also what screeding companies in London will consider, alongside the thickness the screed will need to be poured at and how much it will cost overall to screed your floor.

For all the reasons above, screeding contractors working in London should always have a plan in place before starting screeding work, including precise measurements of the screeding area. Doing a concrete screed job in London also requires reinforcement for the layer your screed will sit on if you are intending to use an unbonded screed, or expose the aggregate and apply a bonding agent if your screed is bonded.

With any cement screed work in London, the layer should  be cleaned of dust and debris before work continues, and the site must be proven to be watertight, as all good screeding contractors in London know. For a concrete screed floor in London the screed may need to be mixed, especially if you are intending to use unbonded screed. Screeding in London premises benefits from adding polypropylene fibres into the mix and adding water, reducing  the chances of your floor developing micro cracks.

When you work with us, one of the leading screeding companies in London, you don’t need to worry about a thing, as our concrete screed work in London offers guaranteed results. Screeding London Company
Traditional Cement Screed, Concrete & Sand Screed London

When you need floor screed work in London, we are the company to call and the team you can trust. We have a team of professionals who are desiccated to doing the best screeding in London.

For many of our screeding jobs across London,  a bonded screed is bonded to the slab or substrate below, and the main way that bonded screeds fail is that the bond between the screed and the substrate fails, making it  more likely to happen if the screed is too thick.   For a substantial number of our floor screed projects in and around London, we use an unbonded screed  which is first separated from the slab or substrate below. This is the main way that an unbonded screed fails is to lift or curl, which is more likely to happen if the screed is too thin, something our floor screed team in London are very familiar with.

Concrete screed London

When doing a concrete screed in London, it is important to ensure that bonded screeds are  thin, normally less than 50mm, as unbonded screeds should be thick, normally 70mm, or 100mm if curling must be avoided. Some floor screed jobs in London have precise structural requirements, such as preventing disproportionate collapse and the development of composite action with the concrete slab below. Sometimes, the use of a screed can be avoided.

Cement screed London

For each of our cement screed projects, our London screeders are careful to specify the depth and type of screed needed early in the design process. During all floor screed work in London, these issues dictate the design of the screed, including the architecturally specified floor finishes, the construction tolerances and the provision of falls.

FAQ about Traditional Sand Screed and Cement Screed in London

Can I screed over old screed?

With screeding, London premises can use floor screed over old floor screed. Using a concrete screed pour over a pre-existing concrete floor or sub base will help level it out and enable your screeders to create and leave a smooth finish.

How can you tell if the screed is dry?

Our screeders in London use the Calcium Carbide Test, which is where a mid depth sample of the floor screed is taken and allowed to react with calcium carbide reagent. On reacting, the mixture releases acetylene gas, the amount of which indicates the level of moisture in the sample, a common screeding test across London sites.

Can you use traditional screed over floorboards?

When doing floor screed in your London properties, our screeders sometimes use solid wood floors that they nail onto battens or glue-down directly to screed subfloors. With floor screed on engineered wood flooring, traditional screed can be installed using either the floating or glue-down methods when you have the presence of a floor screed.

What happens if the screed gets wet?

For floor screed work in your London site, if the floor screed is laid below 0°C, the water will freeze and expand by about 9 percent, potentially causing a disruptive reaction that could make the floor screed break. Curing and drying times – Most floor creeds our London screeding contractors do settle and develop strength within five days if kept dry, at or above 5°C.

Concrete Screed & Screeding London
What's The Difference?

cement screed London during process of pouring in new house

When it comes to screeding in London, concrete and screed share some qualities, with both concrete and concrete screed being made from the same basic materials: cement, water and aggregate (sand, stone or gravel).

When it comes to their uses as building materials for floor screed work in London premises, concrete and screed are very different. Where high quality concrete is used for construction and structural tasks, screed is applied as a top layer to a concrete base, as our screeders in London all know. With many screeding jobs in London, concrete and screed are both made from a mixture of cement, water and aggregate, with the main difference between the two materials is the type of aggregate that is used.

When our screeders in London mix concrete, they add coarse aggregate like gravel to the mix. For many screeding projects in London, this coarse aggregate gives the concrete its strength, durability and workability, and makes it suitable for structural work. Our screeders in London don’t usually employ the gravelly aggregate that we put in our concrete, as many of our floor screed work for London clients requires fine, sharp sand, with a maximum grain size of about 4mm.

Screed is not used in structural works but rather as a top layer for a concrete floor, and as a floor screed in London properties it provides durability, and is designed to withstand the impact of constant use and heavy footfall. This kind of floor screed for London projects helps protect concrete floors, delivering durability alongside an even, level finish.

Screeding London - Concrete floor screed
What are they used for?

Concrete screed is considered the ideal building material for London buildings, mostly because it has the capacity to achieve and reach a very high compressive strength. Another great qualities of this kind of screeding in London constructions projects is both durability, cost-effective and non-combustible.

Cement screed is commonly used in London buildings, because of the fact that its higly versatile as well as long lasting. That’s a high quality product that is safe to be used on large scale and in simple home renovation structural projects by screeders across London.

Types of Floor Screed London

Bonded Screed

Fully bonded layer to the substrate using a primer or bonding agent is used in many floor screed London jobs. A floor screed method that is used in London houses with thinner screeds, especially if heavy loading is expected, also if there’s not enough space available to lay an unbonded screed. When our screeders in London do the laying process, take extreme care of it, so they can provide the best results to the customers.

Unbonded Screed

Many screeding jobs in London use unbonded screed, where instead of being bonded directly to the base, it is applied over a damp proof membrane laid on top of the concrete base. As our experienced screeders in London know, the major advantage of unbonded screed is that the flooring is not in direct contact with the main structure and so the potential impacts of settlement or shrinkage can be less problematic. As a floor screed in London properties, unbonded screeds can be more prone to curling, a vertical distortion of the edges due to temperature differences or moisture content throughout the thickness of the screed, if dried quickly.

Floating Screed

For this kind of concrete screed job at London premises, the screed is laid on top of insulation to create a thermally efficient floor. When screeding in London, we find that these floating screeds are commonly used where underfloor heating systems are provided or thermal or acoustic insulation is required.

What is Floor Screed London? - Concrete Screed, Sand Screed & Cement Screed

When it comes to screeding work in London, most screed is made from cement and water, forming a paste and coats the surface of the sand or the aggregates, and the cement paste hardens by a process called hydration, forming a hardened mass of high strength and durability.

As our screeders in London know, screed is a smooth mix, consisting of considerably less aggregates to that of the mix used for concrete. For many floor screed jobs in London, screed is usually applied on top of the concrete slab and is most commonly used as a finishing layer on internal floors or to level the floor prior to final floor coverings carpet, tiles, natural stone, linoleum, wood flooring, resin coatings etc.

As one of the trusted screeding companies in London, we ensure that our safety and results are exceptional,  especially when a colourful or functional floor is needed rather than a bare concrete surface. For industrial purposes, or commercial locations, which will undergo frequent traffic, a more bespoke floor screed job  is required for our London customers,  more robust than some other DIY or residential projects.

Most screeding in London is done on internal surfaces,  often covering heating systems, acoustic or thermal insulation. Traditionally floor screed jobs in London use sand and cement mixtures, blended and applied on site.

Our screeders in London will work to counter this unreliability by using one of the proprietary screeds and kits available on the market offering enhanced strength and a faster application speed that will react more predictably.

Which Floor Screed London Should You Use

As our experienced screeders in London know well, flooring is an essential component of any structure, taking the brunt of daily activities, and exposed to constant wear and tear. As such, when doing a floor screed at your London premises, it is vital to invest in floors that can cope with regular foot traffic while simultaneously adding value to your property.

Floor screed in London properties is the layer of the floor which sits between the concrete and the final finish, be that porcelain tiles, wood, vinyl or carpet. For all screeding work in London premises, the essential function of floor screed is to provide a sufficiently strong, durable, smooth and level surface for the final finish to be laid on.

With various types of floor screed available, from concrete screed in London office blocks to sand screed in London residences, which one to use is an important choice. Our screeders in London help customers establish the most advisable style and type for you and your project, something that makes us one of the most trusted screeding companies in London.

Selecting the best tool for properly Floor Screed & Screeding London

For quality, level flooring, our screeders in London use the professional tool, the screeding level, which are flat on the edge they place on the concrete. Concrete screed in London properties done like this avoid beveling or missed sections, as well as containing a level vial which helps all floor screed work in London achieve level surfaces.

Using a high quality screeding level is Important for all floor screed work in London, one which is capped at both ends to help prevent concrete from seeping inside. Our screeders across London use levels made of a tough aluminum alloy to resist warping and prevent damage to the tool if dropped.

With all floor screed and other types of screeding jobs in London, the edges should be smooth, ngallowing the concrete to pass over more efficiently. Put simply, when it comes to floor screed work in London properties, using a 2×4 piece of lumber doesn’t produce great results. which is why our screeders in London use a level.

When it comes to doing concrete screed in London properties, all you technically need is a flat board, though this simple approach to screeding in London,  purchasing a 2×4 and attempting to use it for this kind of work does present some problems, and may end up delivering poor results.

Sometimes, when screeders in London buy a 2×4 lumber piece it is not necessarily straight, and could be warped or include an edge that has been beveled off or even contains a knot or sap hole. Doing your project with sub-standard equipment is not great for quality concrete screed results in London, often meaning screeders in London end up making multiple passes to get a level surface, with unintended hills or hollows.

When you are doing a floor screed job at your London premises, lumber and pieces of aluminum aren’t great for establishing whether a surface is level, even if they do flatten the top of the concrete. As screeding companies in London now, this kind of method can create a slight slope, not what any professional screeders in London would want.

Advantages of a Sand Screed & Cement Screed London

When it comes to screeding work in London, to get high quality results and level floors, it is always a good idea to use quality products, whether it’s a sand screed or cement screed floor your London property needs. We believe that quality floor screed work in London is highlighted by the standard of the products used, and both concrete screed and sand screed in London can be viable solutions for great results.

At Screed London, we take pride in being one of the trust screed companies in London, always sourcing our sand and cement screed from reliable UK suppliers. Our superb screeding work in London meets all required British Standards and comes with our industry leading 10 year guarantee. Our screeders in London use our own factory mixed sand and cement screed for various projects across London, each providing true quality cement dispersion and structural strength.

When it comes to suspended or in-situ concrete floors, our screeders in London use traditional concrete screed for many London projects, used specifically to toplight aggregate screeds, sometimes it is also a floor screed used in a floating construction over insulation to enhance acoustic or thermal properties.

Vibrating Handheld Screeds

For floor screed work in London, vibrating handheld screeds are the simplest tool. These floor screed tools have metal screed bar that is connected to a frame and it vibrates thanks to a small motor. This motor is operated by the operator who uses handles on the frame to pull the screed backward along the fresh concrete surface in order to smooth and level it.

When it comes to doing floor screed and different screeding work in London, these tools have the advantage of ease of use, allowing our screeders in London to work standing up, as the vibration motor smooths the concrete. For smaller floor screed projects in London, these are sufficient. For more large scale screeding jobs in London, they can be used alongside larger equipment for limited space work.

Helpful for our screeders across London, these screed bars are easy to use, and practical to attach, remove, and replace, with up to 16 feet tools available. For concrete screed work in London, vibrating handheld screeds are ideal, with 5-inch or higher slump and on jobs that don’t require extreme flatness, as all good screeders in London know.

Screeding London Are Part of the
Latest Solution to Surface Insulation!

For professional screeders in London, screeding is a straightforward process that must be done immediately after the spreading of the sand or cement screed at your London property  is complete. It is critical that all floor screed work in London is done before any excess bleed water rises to the surface.

As our expert screeders in London know, screeding can also be called “striking off”. This is because floor screed work in London premises involves a process where screeders strike off, or remove some excess concrete from the surface.

To do concrete screed in London premises, the flat edge of the tool must be set at the end of the concrete, and screeders working on those London jobs should use light pressure, constantly checking that the floor screed is level, before pulling it to the other side of the concrete, firmly.

Using this screeding method in London removes a small amount from the top of the concrete to create a level surface.

Our screeders in London know that this screeding method helps remove any hills and fill any holes. During all floor screed work in London, screeders should check that the finished surface is level, and when the screeding is complete, it can be cured.

When it comes to sand screed and cement screed jobs in London, each has benefits from being laid into falls to helping excess water get disposed efficiently. Floor screeds at most London properties can be fully, partially or unbonded and achieved by using cement screed. Each of our cement screed jobs in London is unique, which is why all our screeders right across London see each project assess carefully before deciding on appropriate reinforcement options for sand screed and cement creed work in specific London buildings.

For concrete screed work in London, though a flat surface is all that is technically needed, results aren’t necessarily guaranteed by this. As one of the leading screeding companies in London, we know that it is critical to use high quality screeding levels, such as a Keson, for smooth, time and cost effective results. For truly level floor screed in London properties, equipment and methods really matter, and the advantages are there to see.

Why is it Important to Concrete Screeding in London?

When it comes to building construction, screeding at London sites is an essential part of the process, especially when  pouring flatwork projects including driveways, floors or parking lots.

Experienced and fully accredited floor screed contractors in London do things properly, ensuring that every pour creates beautiful slabs that offer long term durability for the structure. When you do a floor screed job in a London building, the screed itself passes over concrete ,levelling the surface.

Most floor screed you find in London buildings vibrates or spins, working larger aggregate down, just below the surface, leaving smaller sand and cream on the surface that helps build a smooth, professional-looking finish. This is how the best screeding in London is done, every time.

When it comes to floor screed work in London, a smooth level base is just as essential as a smooth, level surface. As our screeding team in London knows well, concrete is like glass in as much as  It bends, flexes, freezes, and thaws, while Imperfections can cause structural weakness, meaning easier breakages.

For these reasons, floor screed contractors  working on London sites place control joints in concrete, and if the concrete is in danger of cracking, the screeding team wants to control exactly where that crack will be.

Drying and Completion Process of Floor Screeding

If you are looking for floor screed work on your London project, keep in mind that the time is takes for screeding work to dry depends on a multitude of important factors.

From the thickness of the floor screed applied at your London site to precisely where and how it was laid, each element matters, whether it is sand screed or concrete screed. Whatever the floor screed, it must be left for at least two days to set before you can begin to walk on it.

With some screeding work in London properties drying times can be shortened to 16 hours, but only if certain additives are added to the floor screed used.

For areas that require screeding and have heavy foot traffic, our screeding team in London always suggests that it be left for at  least one week, as heavy pressure applied during this time can jeopardise the structural integrity of the floor.

Floor screed reaches peak strength after one month.
